The Running of the Balls

Residents of the Sunset Hills neighborhood, especially those on Ridgeway Drive and Madison Avenue are working long hours to have their neighborhood ready for the “Running of the Balls” this weekend. People from all over will take a night run (or walk) through the neighborhood, admiring all of glowing, twinkling 1-foot diameter lightballs on chicken wire shot into the neighborhood’s 50′ trees.

The women in the above photo were working diligently to get the decorations just right. They used a plastic bow-and-arrow contraption to shoot the electric cords into the branches and then pulled the lightballs to their lofty locations. While this neighborhood makes this effort purely for Greensboro’s enjoyment. Residents encourage spectators to bring canned goods to donate for the hungry in our city. Tossing a few cans of soup or tuna into the box at the corner of Ridgeway and Madison is the best way to express gratitude for this grand tradition. Seeing this neighborhood glowing with holiday fun, makes the darkness of the winter solstice days easier to endure.

While the running event this Saturday is fully subscribed, the display will be up through the holiday season.
