Although the store doesn’t open until 9:00 am, here we see a line of nearly two dozen people at 7:45 am Thursday morning in front of the Apple Store at Friendly Center. Every day, people line up early to purchase the second generation I Pad. According to the man in the Carolina sweat shirt, daily, a new shipment arrives and sells out immediately. While Apple hasn’t disclosed figures, rumor has it that Apple sold about 2.5 million I-Pads in March alone. Supply constraints are everywhere from Best Buy to online with Apple. This reminds us of the Cabbage Patch doll and UGG boot craze in 1983 and 2003, respectively.
Greensboro is so fortunate to have an Apple store. Young and old alike flock there to sample 21st century technology. One only has to observe for a few minutes to see how Apple is transforming our relationship with technology. From small children to teenagers to adults, access to information, entertainment, and one’s social network is a mere fingertip away. Perhaps someday, the Apple stores will get a sign like McDonald’s stating how many billions have been served. In the meantime, the man at the back of the line gets the patron/patron award for being both an Macintosh/Apple and McDonald’s aficionado.
