The Old Central Fire Station opened in 1926 at 318 North Greene Street. When it was at peak use– pre mid 1950’s– it housed not only the fire trucks but also an elaborate alarm system, a garage, and a training tower. It closed in 1980, being replaced by the Church Street Station. Fortunately, several of these early fire stations have been preserved in Greensboro. This one, dwarfed by the Marriott and only a block away from the JP building, is on the National Register of Historic Places. At one time, this building was home to four fire companies. Now, it is a grand relic of our past. Greensboro’s fire fighters are committed to meeting the community’s needs and can usually get to a fire in less than seven minutes.
