Reflecting on Museums

Museums are places to see exhibits related to display, study, and display items of cultural, scientific, and historic value. Most university campuses have at least one and many are free. The above photo was taken recently at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The Weatherspoon, also branded as WAM, is located on the UNCG campus at the corner of Tate and Spring Garden Streets. Since it is free, has free parking in the back, and has thought-provoking exhibits that change frequently, we try to get there often.

On this, the last day of February, and the last day of Black History Month, we wanted to remind our readers of a not-to-be-missed exhibit, “Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters of the American South.” Sometimes, it is not just the exhibits themselves, but the people you have an opportunity to interact with at museums. On our last visit to the museum, we had a woman who shared her great insight about the exhibit. As it turned out, she was a long-time docent, just acquainting herself with the exhibit on her day off. As we were leaving, we were struck by the beauty of this woman, who had also seen the exhibit, and had stopped in the stairwell for a minute. Likely reflecting on the beauty and sisterhood exuded in the quilts. Sometimes, the art and beauty we find in museums goes way beyond the four walls. Just getting out of our normal routines and interacting with others is, in itself, art. Art galleries and museums are the perfect place aliven all of our senses.

Happy Saturday!
