Yesterday, we stopped at Reconsidered Goods on Spring Garden Street (at West Market) and they were putting out someone’s entire rhinoceros collection. There were probably between 200- 300 of them in every material and size. There were realistic rhinos and playful, cartoonish ones. There was a pair, both seated on a swing; a hand carved hardwood mounted, rhino head from Kenya with an extra sharp horn. There was a toy car with a rhino front hood. We’re imagining that people had fun gifting their collector friend rhinos for every holiday. In the front of this photo is the brass rhino made in Korea. Prices ranged from 25¢ for the 1 1/2 inch plastic one missing a leg to $9 for the brass one.
The only thing missing from the rhino collection was the back story behind the person who collected, how they got started collecting them, which were their personal favorites and, the elephant in the room is how they came to be donated to RG. We wish the collector had written a journal about their collection and donated it with the collection. Even better, we wish we’d met and interviewed the owner. Do you know a person in the Greensboro area who collected rhinos? What do you collect? If you are looking for a place to donate a collection, consider Reconsidered Goods.
Happy Wednesday!
