Usually, Sundays are for something spiritual: A photo of a church, a steeple, some other house of worship, or simply a message. today it is… a message. Almost always, church websites say “welcome” or “if you are seeking…… welcome.” Today’s WELCOME comes from the Weatherspoon Art Museum (WAM) on the campus of the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Currently, the Weatherspoon has a fabulous quilt exhibit, “Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South.” There are photos of Nikki Giovanni and her mom quilting, and North Carolina’s own Maya Angelou also creating a quilt. The large gallery upstairs is filled with quilts. The exhibit draws you in, beginning with the sign makes you feel welcome. It is as if a church could hold a service there. We’re betting the choir’s singing would sound wonderful surrounded by handmade quilts that have behind them hours of love and hands working together, stitching pieces of fabric.
The Weatherspoon is closed on Sundays and Mondays and open Tue, Wed, Fri, Sat from 10am-5pm and Thursdays from 10am-8pm. Parking for museum visitors is free. To be sure, if you visit, you will be WELCOME.
Happy Sunday!
